Adelaide Bike Kitchen (ABK)
About
Adelaide Bike Kitchen (ABK) is a volunteer-run community bicycle collective in Brompton, South Australia (19 East Street, inside UPark). It exists to help people learn to fix and maintain their own bikes in a supportive, social setting. Using a hands-off approach, volunteers guide participants while they do the work themselves, building skills and confidence. The space is also a place to socialise, share knowledge, and connect around cycling as everyday transport. ABK aims to normalise bike riding, keep people on their bikes, and celebrate the bicycle as a practical, liberating form of transport that supports healthier, lower-carbon communities. It is an inclusive, safe space open to all abilities, backgrounds, and skill levels, with a strong DIY and community ethos. Most parts are second-hand donations, and the focus is on learning and reuse rather than retail. Open workshops run on Wednesdays and Fridays (5:30–8 pm) and Saturdays (1–4 pm). Wednesday evenings often include a communal vegan or vegetarian dinner after the tools are put down. People can also get involved by volunteering as mechanics, cooks, or space helpers, or by donating bikes, parts, time, or money. No one is turned away for lack of funds. In short, Adelaide Bike Kitchen is a welcoming community workshop and social hub where people learn bike mechanics, keep usable parts out of landfill, and build connections through cycling.
