Bike Melrose MTB Club

Bike Melrose MTB Club is the volunteer-driven cycling organisation at the heart of Melrose and the Southern Flinders Ranges in South Australia, working to develop, maintain and promote the incredible riding opportunities surrounding Mount Remarkable. The club's story began in 2002 as the Southern Flinders Rough Riders Inc., when a group of passionate local riders began working with the community, landowners and volunteers to create trails and establish Melrose as a mountain biking destination. As cycling in the region grew and diversified, the organisation adopted the Bike Melrose name in 2017, embracing not only mountain biking but the wider cycling community. Trail development and maintenance are a huge part of what Bike Melrose does. Club volunteers have spent countless hours building, clearing and maintaining trails, working alongside private landowners, the District Council of Mount Remarkable and National Parks and Wildlife Service SA. This collaboration has helped create a remarkable collection of riding opportunities stretching from the trails immediately surrounding Melrose into Mount Remarkable National Park and the wider Southern Flinders Ranges. Melrose itself has around 80km of established singletrack in and around the foothills of Mount Remarkable, ranging from approachable family riding through to rocky, technical trails that have given the town its reputation amongst experienced mountain bikers. The wider riding offering includes the Remarkable Epic, the Willowie trail network, pump track and skills facilities, alongside road and gravel opportunities. Bike Melrose was also involved in planning the 20km Willowie Trails network within Mount Remarkable National Park. Designed for beginner through to intermediate riders, the network added a more accessible, family-friendly riding option to complement Melrose's traditionally rugged and technical terrain. The club isn't only about looking after trails. Social riding, community events and bringing riders together remain an important part of its identity, with opportunities for locals and visitors to connect with the Melrose riding community. Bike Melrose is also behind some of the events that have helped put the town on Australia's mountain biking map. The annual 18/6/3 Hours of Melrose combines endurance racing with the social atmosphere of a weekend in town, while the club has hosted major competition including the 2025 AusCycling Mountain Bike Marathon National Championships, showcasing the Southern Flinders trail network to riders from around Australia. Ultimately, membership helps support much more than a riding club. It strengthens the volunteer organisation advocating for the trails, maintaining them and working with land managers to continue improving cycling throughout the region.
