Blue Derby Foundation

Blue Derby Foundation (BDF) is an independent, community-focused charity supporting the world-renowned Blue Derby Mountain Bike Trails and the township of Derby in North East Tasmania. The Foundation was created to give the local community and businesses a stronger voice in the future of Derby while helping protect the character, heritage and authenticity of the town as it has grown into one of Australia's most significant mountain bike destinations. At the heart of its work is the Blue Derby trail network, encompassing more than 125 kilometres of purpose-built mountain bike trails through the spectacular forests and landscapes surrounding Derby. The network caters for a broad range of riders, from approachable trails for newer mountain bikers through to technical cross-country, enduro and gravity riding that has attracted riders and major events from around the world. The Foundation plays an important role in helping ensure this trail network remains sustainable into the future. It raises funds to support trail maintenance, advocates for investment in new trails and infrastructure, helps organise and support volunteer trail crews and works alongside Dorset Council and other stakeholders on the continued development of the destination. Importantly, Dorset Council remains the public asset manager responsible for the physical management and maintenance of the trail network, while the Blue Derby Foundation leads areas including the Blue Derby brand, partnerships, fundraising, promotion, events and community engagement. The Foundation's role extends well beyond the trails themselves. It supports the ongoing development of Derby and surrounding communities, working with local residents and businesses to ensure the benefits created by mountain bike tourism continue flowing through the region. Community involvement is central to the organisation. Membership is open to people with a connection to Derby, including residents, local businesses and their employees, giving those directly connected with the town an opportunity to help shape its future. The Foundation also supports and promotes mountain bike events and community activities, helping bring riders and visitors to Derby while creating opportunities for the wider community. Research and engagement with riders, visitors, residents and businesses help inform its advocacy and long-term decision making. From supporting trail funding and volunteer efforts to promoting Derby as a riding destination and advocating for its community, the Foundation provides an important connection between the trails, the riders, local businesses, land managers and the people who call Derby home.
