About this club
Blue Mountains BMX Club is a family-oriented BMX racing club based at Ferris Lane in Lawson, in the heart of the NSW Blue Mountains. Operating since 1981, the club has been introducing generations of local riders to BMX racing and provides a welcoming pathway from young children discovering two wheels through to adults and experienced racers. The club caters for an impressively broad age range. Children can begin with Mini Wheelers from around two years old, using balance bikes to build confidence before progressing onto pedals. From there, riders can move through Sprockets and graded racing, with adult and open categories providing opportunities to keep racing well beyond the junior years. Regular club racing forms the heart of the BMX calendar. The club generally races every second Saturday, with its annual program divided into two club series. Rather than relying purely on age categories, racing includes graded divisions from E through to A alongside Mini Wheelers, Sprockets and Mixed Open, helping riders find competition appropriate to their ability and experience. Visiting licensed BMX riders from other clubs can also participate. Between race days, regular gate practice sessions give riders an opportunity to work on their starts and spend more time riding the track. The club currently advises that it does not run a regular formal coaching program, so for RTS I'd avoid describing it as a coaching club; its current offering is better represented as club racing + gates + rider development through participation. New riders are well catered for. Some loan bikes, helmets, gloves and riding gear are available through the club, reducing the amount of specialist equipment families need before trying BMX. Riders who aren't sure whether BMX is for them can also access an AusCycling four-week free trial, which allows them to participate in eligible club racing before committing to ongoing membership. The BMX track itself is also an asset for the wider Blue Mountains riding community. Local tourism information lists the facility as open to the general public throughout the year, outside organised club use, giving local kids and riders another place to enjoy their bikes even when they aren't participating in club racing. Appropriate safety equipment should still be worn when using the track. Like most grassroots BMX organisations, Blue Mountains BMX Club relies heavily on its volunteer community. Parents and members contribute to officiating, scoring, first aid, the canteen, fundraising and track maintenance, with the club noting that race days depend on having enough qualified officials to operate safely. Whether you're looking to get a young rider started in BMX, try racing for the first time, practise your gate starts, join regular club competition or simply connect with the BMX community in the Blue Mountains, Blue Mountains BMX Club provides a friendly grassroots pathway into the sport.
