About this club

Cairns Cycling Club (CCC) is a long-established road and track cycling club based in Cairns, Tropical North Queensland, with more than 70 years of history fostering competitive cycling in the region. The club welcomes juniors through to Masters, providing opportunities for riders to learn new skills, train and compete across both track and road disciplines. The club's home is Smith Park Velodrome on Keeble Street in Manunda, a historic cycling facility that has been at the centre of track racing in Cairns since the 1950s. The original track was clay before being resurfaced with bitumen in the early 1960s, and over the years Smith Park has hosted Australian professional championships alongside numerous Queensland and local titles. Today's 400-metre outdoor velodrome has only slight banking, giving it a very different character from the steeply banked indoor tracks many riders associate with track cycling. The hard bitumen surface makes for surprisingly fast riding, and lighting allows the club to use the facility for evening racing and training. Track remains a major part of club life, with regular racing, junior development, adult and junior skills clinics and structured training sessions held at Smith Park. The club also has track bikes available for hire, making it considerably easier for riders to try the discipline without immediately investing in a specialist bike. Dedicated junior and women's sessions provide additional pathways for riders to develop their confidence and skills. Away from the velodrome, Cairns Cycling Club runs a varied road racing program throughout Far North Queensland. Events include criteriums and traditional road races, with courses extending beyond Cairns to locations including Mareeba, Gordonvale, Bramston Beach, Millaa Millaa and Malanda. Racing is graded, allowing riders of different abilities to find an appropriate level of competition. Two particularly significant fixtures are the club's annual Mareeba MiHaven event and Cairns Cup on Wheels, which form part of the October long-weekend racing program and bring together the club's road and track traditions. There's a strong development pathway behind the racing too. New riders can access AusCycling's four-week free trial for eligible club activities, while structured junior training helps younger cyclists progressively build bike handling, fitness and race craft. The club has also worked to grow female participation, with dedicated women's coaching sessions forming part of its current training program. That development continues into higher-level competition. Cairns riders remain active on the national racing scene, with a Cairns Cycling Club women's team taking third in the Masters 120+ Club Team Time Trial at the 2026 AusCycling Road National Championships. Whether you're looking to introduce a junior to cycling, try riding a velodrome, develop your road-racing skills, join graded competition or progress towards state and national events, Cairns Cycling Club provides a strong pathway into road and track cycling in Tropical North Queensland.
