About this club

Cairns Mountain Bike Club (CMBC) is the heart of the mountain biking community in Cairns and Far North Queensland, based at the internationally renowned Smithfield Mountain Bike Park. With roots stretching back to the earliest days of Australian mountain biking in the 1980s, the club brings together recreational riders, juniors, social riders, trail builders and racers across cross-country, downhill and gravity enduro. Smithfield is central to the club's identity. The park offers around 35km of established cross-country and downhill trails, alongside slalom and pump-track facilities, all set amongst the tropical rainforest and rugged terrain north of Cairns. The network ranges from approachable riding through to highly technical trails and a World Cup-level downhill course, creating opportunities for riders across very different abilities and disciplines. Few Australian clubs have such a strong connection to the international history of mountain biking. Cairns and Smithfield have hosted UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in 1996 and 2017, World Cup rounds, National Series racing, UCI Masters Mountain Bike World Championships and multiple editions of Crankworx Cairns. Iconic Smithfield features including Jacob's Ladder, Croc Slide and the Worlds DH track have become part of Australian MTB history. The region has also produced some extraordinary riders and trail builders. Michael “Sik Mik” Hannah and Tracey Hannah developed their skills on the challenging terrain around Cairns before becoming internationally successful downhill racers, while pioneering trail builder and MTB Hall of Famer Glen Jacobs was a founding figure in the local club and played an enormous role in establishing Cairns' trail-building culture and international reputation. At grassroots level, CMBC runs a busy program of club socials, downhill racing, gravity enduro, junior enduro, skills opportunities and other MTB events. The 2026 calendar includes multiple rounds of junior and senior enduro and downhill competition alongside regular social rides and events such as the Pony Express Day/Night. Junior and developing riders are an important part of the community, with the club running junior clinics and junior-specific racing, while women's rides and clinics provide additional opportunities for riders to build skills and confidence in a supportive environment. Trail stewardship is another huge part of what the club does. CMBC is volunteer powered, with members contributing to trail maintenance, development days and environmental projects throughout Smithfield. Membership directly supports trail care and expansion as well as the club's grassroots events and riding community. Smithfield remains a serious competition venue too. In 2026 it hosted the Cairns Rainforest Rumble, incorporating the finale of the UCI Oceania Continental Series and AusCycling National Series racing in both XCO and downhill, followed in August by the Queensland Downhill State Championships, hosted by Cairns Mountain Bike Club. Whether you're looking to discover Cairns' legendary rainforest singletrack, get the kids into MTB, join a social ride, race XC, enduro or downhill, or volunteer to help look after the trails, Cairns Mountain Bike Club is the connection to one of Australia's most significant mountain biking communities.
