About this club

Capital Region Masters Cycling Club (CRMCC) is a cycling club specifically for riders 30 years and over, providing friendly and affordable road, criterium and track racing throughout Canberra, the ACT and surrounding areas of NSW. The club caters for everyone from riders trying racing for the first time through to experienced Masters competitors, with an emphasis on safe, sociable and competitive cycling. Originally known as the ACT Veterans Cycling Club, CRMCC was formed in 1993 after a group of veteran Canberra cyclists began organising their own races. The first official club race was held at Point Hut in August that year, with 20 competitors, before the organisation was formally incorporated later in 1993. The club affiliated with the Australian Veterans Cycling Council the following year, opening opportunities for its members to compete in interstate and national Masters events. Road racing is a major part of the club's identity. Events are generally around 40–50km and take place at a variety of courses throughout the ACT and neighbouring NSW. Over the years racing has visited locations including Uriarra, Point Hut, Tharwa, Sutton, Gundaroo, Gunning and Bungendore, giving members plenty of variety rather than tying the club to a single circuit. Criterium racing is another major part of the calendar, particularly at the purpose-built Stromlo Forest Park criterium circuit. Riders are graded according to their performance and fitness rather than simply their age, allowing men and women of different ages to race against others of comparable ability. New racers receive particular attention when being graded so they can begin in a group appropriate to their experience and fitness. The club also offers track racing at the Narrabundah Velodrome – affectionately known as the Bundahdome. Track has been part of the club's program since its early years, giving Masters riders another opportunity to develop speed, tactics and race craft alongside the road and criterium program. One of CRMCC's biggest events is the Gunning Two Day Stage Race – Peter McLennan Memorial, an annual multi-stage event and a highlight of the club's racing calendar. The Gunning event dates back to 1999 and has become an important part of the club's racing tradition. Importantly, you don't need previous racing experience or high-end equipment to get started. The club actively welcomes new racers, with grading and handicapping designed to create competitive racing between riders of similar abilities. For cyclists who enjoy the community without wanting to race, CRMCC also offers a non-competitive membership for social participation. The club remains strongly volunteer driven, with members helping deliver races through marshalling, officiating, timing, handicapping, course setup and club administration. Its weekly “Bleat” newsletter keeps members connected with upcoming racing, results and what's happening around the club. More than 30 years after its formation, CRMCC continues to provide something quite different within Canberra cycling – a dedicated environment where Masters riders can keep competing, discover racing later in life and enjoy cycling alongside riders of similar abilities. Whether you're looking to try cycle racing for the first time after 30, return to competition after time away, race criteriums at Stromlo, experience track cycling or simply keep challenging yourself alongside other Masters riders, Capital Region Masters Cycling Club provides a welcoming pathway into Masters cycling in the Canberra region.
