About this club
Cockburn BMX Club is a long-established, family-focused BMX racing club based at Malabar Park in Bibra Lake, south of Perth. For more than three decades the club has introduced generations of Western Australian riders to BMX, from first-time Mini Wheelers and young Sprockets through to experienced racers competing at State and National level. The club's story at Bibra Lake began in 1990, when members relocated from Fremantle and transformed a former landfill site into a BMX venue. Remarkably, just 12 months later the new track was capable of hosting the 1991 Australian BMX Racing National Championships. That volunteer-built foundation has grown into one of Western Australia's most impressive modern BMX facilities. In 2025, Malabar Park underwent an $8.9 million redevelopment, delivering a new UCI-standard BMX racing track capable of hosting major events. The upgraded facility includes a five-metre start hill with electronic gate, Pro Straight, new clubrooms, canteen and amenities, floodlighting and warm-up facilities, alongside a public pump track, playground, BBQ area, toilets and parking. The new venue represents the culmination of an extraordinary 14-year journey by the club and its volunteers. Planning for a major redevelopment began long before construction, with members continuing to race, maintain the existing facility, fundraise and advocate for a track capable of supporting both grassroots BMX and higher-level competition. Regular Tuesday night racing remains at the heart of club life. Practice begins before racing, with dedicated gate training available for newer and beginner riders, followed by Mini Wheelers and the wider race program. The club caters for a broad range of ages and abilities, making it possible for families to discover BMX at grassroots level while more experienced riders continue developing their racing skills. Riders wanting to progress further also have access to private BMX coaching at Cockburn, with several coaching sessions operating around the weekly club program. Combined with regular gate practice and racing on a competition-standard track, this gives developing riders plenty of opportunity to work on starts, jumping, pumping, cornering and race craft. Cockburn also provides a pathway into Western Australian State Series and higher-level BMX competition. The upgraded venue hosted Round 7 of the 2026 AusCycling BMX Racing State Series – Western Australia, with competition spanning Mini Wheelers and Sprockets through Challenge, Cruiser, Junior Superclass, Superclass and Masters categories. While the club has produced riders capable of competing at high levels, its community remains central to its identity. AusCycling describes Cockburn as a place where riders, families and supporters become volunteers and lifelong friendships are formed, with generations of Western Australian riders finding a home at the club. Importantly, Malabar Park isn't only for club members. Outside Cockburn BMX Club operating times, the main BMX track is open to the public, generally from 7am–6pm daily. The five-metre start ramp remains reserved for club training and racing, while the surrounding pump track and community facilities provide additional riding opportunities for families and recreational riders. Whether you're looking to get a child started in BMX, learn to use the gate, join your first race, develop your skills through coaching or compete at State and National level, Cockburn BMX Club provides a welcoming community and one of Western Australia's standout BMX facilities.
