About this club

Coffs Harbour Mountain Bike Club is a long-established mountain biking community based on the Coffs Coast of northern New South Wales, supporting riders across cross-country, endurance, downhill and gravity disciplines. Surrounded by subtropical forest, steep hinterland and purpose-built singletrack, the club has helped develop a region with a strong reputation for both grassroots riding and high-level mountain bike competition. A major centre for club activity is Pine Creek State Forest near Bonville, around 30 minutes south of Coffs Harbour. The forest contains two established MTB areas – Cows With Guns and The Sawmill – offering very different riding experiences. Forestry Corporation permits the club to manage the Cows With Guns mountain bike area, with the trails remaining available for community use around organised club events. Cows With Guns is the venue for most Coffs Harbour Mountain Bike Club events and provides around 14km of predominantly flowing singletrack and doubletrack. The relatively gentle terrain makes it approachable for developing riders, but the network has been cleverly constructed so that increasing speed adds plenty of challenge for more experienced mountain bikers. Roots, loamy forest soil, berms, rollers and tight turns give the network its distinctive Coffs Coast character. On the opposite side of Pine Creek, The Sawmill steps things up. Its trails include more technical features such as log rides and raised ramps, generally accompanied by alternative B-lines for riders who don't want to tackle the harder features. Some trails are only lightly marked and the network intersects with motorbike trails, so local knowledge can be particularly valuable – official Coffs Coast information specifically points visiting riders towards the club community to connect with organised rides and people familiar with the area. The wider Coffs Harbour area also has a significant downhill heritage, including the renowned Mount Coramba downhill trails. The region has hosted State and National-level downhill competition over the years and developed riders who have progressed to the highest levels of Australian and international mountain biking. Among the club's standout riders is Ryan Gilchrist, who progressed from winning the Australian U21 Enduro title to becoming the 2023 Elite Australian Enduro National Champion while representing Coffs Harbour Mountain Bike Club. Gilchrist has also competed professionally on the UCI Enduro World Series, demonstrating the pathway from the Coffs Coast riding scene into international competition. Coffs Harbour has also produced elite downhill talent. Joshua Button has represented the Coffs club in national-level downhill competition, winning the Elite Men's category at Round 1 of the 2025 AusCycling Downhill National Series. Ryan Gilchrist was also listed with the Coffs club at the 2025 Mountain Bike National Championships, showing that the club remains represented at the pointy end of Australian gravity racing. Beyond racing, the club's relationship with the local trails is an important part of its identity. Maintaining a permitted MTB area within a working State Forest requires an ongoing connection between riders, volunteers and land managers, helping ensure that places such as Cows With Guns remain available for both organised events and everyday recreational riding. Whether you're looking to discover Coffs Coast singletrack, meet local riders, try mountain bike racing, explore Pine Creek or progress into higher-level XC, enduro or downhill competition, Coffs Harbour Mountain Bike Club is a great connection to the mountain biking community of the Coffs Coast.
