About this club

Cootamundra Cycle Club is one of New South Wales' oldest cycling clubs, with a history stretching back to 1895. Based in the Riverina town of Cootamundra, the club brings together competitive road cyclists, mountain bikers and recreational riders, offering a surprisingly diverse cycling community for riders of different ages, abilities and interests. Road cycling has been at the heart of the club for generations. Regular training and social rides explore the quieter country roads surrounding Cootamundra, where riders can choose between relatively flat routes north and west of town or head south and east for more challenging hills. The town's location in a valley also means plenty of routes finish with the welcome bonus of a downhill run back towards Cootamundra. For riders interested in progressing towards competition, the club runs a Skills Development Event using a 26km out-and-back road course west of town. Designed as a bridge between recreational bunch riding and competitive cycling, the event gives riders an opportunity to learn group riding and race skills before stepping into Interclub or Open Handicap racing. Different ability levels participate, making it a particularly useful entry point for cyclists curious about road racing. Cootamundra also has a long tradition of handicap road racing. Two of the best-known events associated with the club are the Cootamundra Annual Cycle Classic and Haycarters Handicap, which have attracted riders from clubs across NSW and the ACT. The handicap format gives riders of different strengths the opportunity to race against each other, creating the distinctive tactical racing for which Australian country cycling has long been known. Mountain biking forms another part of the club community. Cootamundra Cycle Club has a substantial contingent of MTB riders and maintains a dedicated mountain bike area, with club volunteers involved in looking after the land and trails. This gives riders another way to become involved beyond the club's traditional road cycling program. For cyclists more interested in exploring than racing, the club's Cootamundra Bicycle Users Group – BUGs provides a welcoming recreational option. BUGs caters for riders of all ages and abilities, with the emphasis firmly on social cycling, touring and enjoying time on the bike rather than competition. BUG rides use a variety of local routes, generally ranging from around 20–30km for easier outings through to longer 40–55km rides towards places such as Wallendbeen and Stockinbingal. Rides are no-drop, with agreed regrouping points and a designated tail-end rider with First Aid, helping newer and recreational cyclists participate with confidence. The social side extends well beyond Cootamundra. BUG members organise social ride days, weekends away and cycling trips, with previous destinations including Tumbarumba, Yackandandah and Bright. Members also travel to recreational cycling events and tours around Australia, making the group a good connection for anyone interested in cycling holidays and exploring new places by bike. The club remains strongly volunteer driven, with members contributing to race organisation, officiating, trail upkeep and social activities. That community involvement has helped keep cycling alive in Cootamundra for more than 130 years, with multiple generations of local families represented throughout the club's history. Whether you're looking to join a relaxed social ride, discover the country roads around Cootamundra, get into mountain biking, learn bunch-riding skills or experience traditional country road racing, Cootamundra Cycle Club provides a welcoming connection to cycling in the NSW Riverina.
