About this club
Esperance Cycling Club brings together cyclists in Esperance on Western Australia's spectacular south coast, providing a community for recreational riders, regular bunch cyclists and competitive road racers. With long open roads, rolling farmland and some of Australia's most striking coastal scenery on its doorstep, the club provides a great connection for anyone wanting to explore the region on two wheels. Road cycling is at the heart of the club, with regular training and social rides giving local riders an opportunity to build fitness, develop their bunch-riding skills and simply enjoy riding with others. Club rides head out from Esperance onto the surrounding road network, with options for riders looking for everything from steady social kilometres through to stronger training sessions. Competition is another important part of the club community. Esperance Cycling Club organises road racing and cycling events throughout the region, creating opportunities for local riders to experience racing without having to travel the considerable distances involved in reaching Perth and other major Western Australian cycling centres. The standout event is the Tour de Esperance, a long-running fixture on the local sporting calendar. The event is designed to cater for riders of different ages and abilities and continues to receive support through the Shire of Esperance's Community Grants Program. In 2025, Council described the Tour de Esperance specifically as an all-ages and abilities event promoting cycling in Esperance, and the Shire again provided funding to the cycling club in 2026. The club also has an important connection to the cycling facility at Thompson Street, West Beach. Esperance Cycling Club began leasing the site from the Shire in 2014, taking responsibility for an area that had become overgrown following the departure of the Department of Defence. Club volunteers cleared the regrowth, restored the site and maintained the ageing velodrome surface so it could once again be safely used for cycling. That work reflects the volunteer effort behind regional cycling clubs such as Esperance. In addition to organising rides and events, members have contributed directly to maintaining local cycling infrastructure and ensuring the community continues to have dedicated places to ride and train. For visiting cyclists, the club is also a useful connection into the wider Esperance riding community. Regular bunch rides provide an opportunity to meet local riders and discover routes beyond the better-known tourist roads, while the region itself offers an appealing combination of coastal riding, quieter rural roads and longer-distance training opportunities. Whether you're looking to meet other cyclists, join a regular road bunch, build your fitness, try road racing or take part in the Tour de Esperance, Esperance Cycling Club provides a welcoming connection to the cycling community of WA's remote and spectacular south coast.
