Geraldton Mountain Bike Club

Geraldton Mountain Bike Club (GMBC) is a volunteer-powered mountain bike club based in Geraldton on Western Australia’s Mid West coast, with roots stretching back to the early 1990s. The club grew from a group of local road cyclists keen to try the then-new sport of mountain biking and quickly became part of WA’s developing MTB scene, hosting both cross-country and downhill racing throughout the 1990s. A major focus for the club today is the Chapman River Regional Park, where GMBC played an important role in advocating for and helping formalise Geraldton’s local mountain bike network. The park features an approximately 11-kilometre loop, along with jump lines, a pump and jump track and skills facilities, providing options for everything from a casual family ride to riders wanting to work on their technique. Trail stewardship is a big part of the club’s contribution to the local community. GMBC worked alongside the City of Greater Geraldton, Chapman River Friends and Traditional Owners during development of the Chapman River trails, helping ensure mountain biking could coexist with the park’s environmental, cultural and recreational values. A formal trail adoption agreement also established an ongoing role for the club in maintaining and protecting the sanctioned trail network. Geraldton also has a long history of producing and supporting competitive riders, while the club has worked to encourage grassroots and junior participation alongside its racing activities. Further afield, the Mid West offers opportunities for more technical and gravity-focused riding, with major WA enduro events having been held on private trails east of Geraldton. RTS TIP: Geraldton might be better known for beaches, wind and water sports, but there’s plenty of fun to be had on two wheels too. Chapman River is an easy one to add to a Geraldton trip — hit the loop, have a play on the skills and jump areas, then make the most of everything else the Mid West coast has to offer.
