Glenrock Trail Alliance

Glenrock Trail Alliance (GTA) is a volunteer-driven mountain bike advocacy and trail stewardship group dedicated to Glenrock State Conservation Area near Newcastle, NSW. Formed in November 2004, the group was created to give Glenrock’s mountain bike community a united voice and establish a productive working relationship with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). For more than two decades, GTA has played an important role in protecting and improving mountain biking within Glenrock. Its work has included trail advocacy, mapping, volunteer maintenance, consultation and sustainable trail development, while helping demonstrate how purpose-built singletrack can operate successfully within a conservation area. The group’s long-running collaboration with NPWS helped Glenrock become one of the early NSW national parks to formally support a substantial network of mountain bike singletrack. Today, Glenrock Mountain Bike Park offers around 34 kilometres of riding, including approximately 14 kilometres of purpose-built MTB trails and 20 kilometres of linked management trails. Green, blue and black-graded options cater for everyone from newer riders and families through to experienced mountain bikers, with the network winding through forest and woodland and providing access towards Burwood Beach, waterfalls and lookouts. GTA continues to work alongside NPWS to improve the sustainability and longevity of Glenrock’s trails, with volunteers contributing to maintenance and advocating for the future of the network. The Alliance is a great example of just how much persistent grassroots advocacy can achieve, turning what began as concern about losing MTB access into an ongoing relationship helping shape one of Newcastle's best-known riding destinations. RTS TIP: Glenrock is an easy one to underestimate on the map. With singletrack tucked into bushland only minutes from Newcastle and the coast, it's well worth allowing a few hours to explore properly. Stick to the signed MTB network, check trail conditions before heading out and spare a thought for the GTA volunteers whose advocacy and trail work have helped keep riders rolling here for more than 20 years.
