About this club
Illawarra Cycle Club (ICC) is a long-established cycling club serving Wollongong and the wider Illawarra region of New South Wales, bringing together juniors, recreational cyclists and competitive riders across road, criterium and track cycling. The club caters for riders ranging from those wanting to experience organised cycling for the first time through to athletes competing at State and National level. One of ICC's biggest assets is its cycling hub at Lindsay Maynes Park in Unanderra, where riders have access to two purpose-built, traffic-free facilities: the Illawarra Criterium Track and Illawarra Velodrome. Both are used regularly by the club for training and competition, while importantly, Wollongong City Council confirms that they're also open for public recreational use outside organised activities. The Illawarra Criterium Track, opened in 2022, provides a closed-loop circuit suitable for everyone from developing riders through to fast graded racing. ICC currently runs both summer and winter criterium competition there, making crit racing a significant year-round part of the club's program. The current 2026 Winter Criterium Series was still racing at Unanderra in late August. Right alongside it sits the traditional outdoor Illawarra Velodrome, giving the club a dedicated home for track cycling. Track remains an active discipline rather than simply part of ICC's history: the club runs training and racing at Unanderra, including its regular Wednesday Night 100 Lapper, with the next edition scheduled for 2 September 2026. Illawarra riders are also actively competing in NSW track championships and other major track meetings. Road racing is equally important to the club. ICC's current road circuit is located at the top of Mount Keira, with roads completely closed to traffic during racing and the start/finish positioned near Robertson's Lookout. The traffic-free environment allows the club to offer road racing in a safer setting while providing a spectacular backdrop overlooking Wollongong and the coast. The Mount Keira racing program also forms part of the cycling legacy created by the 2022 UCI Road World Championships in Wollongong. ICC describes its closed-road events as contributing to the city's UCI Bike City legacy by creating more opportunities for everyday cyclists to experience racing in a controlled environment. Junior development is a genuine strength of Illawarra Cycle Club. The club has previously established its own Junior Tour and gone on to host NSW Junior Road State Championships, while current 2026 results show Illawarra juniors continuing to compete strongly across both road and track. That junior pathway remains very active today. At the 2026 Junior Tour of Sydney, Illawarra riders appeared across categories from U11 through to U17, including Roman Woods, Hunter Calder, Grace Alcock and Allegra Beretov. Illawarra juniors are also represented in current NSW track competition, demonstrating that young riders can develop across multiple disciplines rather than being confined solely to road racing. ICC also supports group and recreational riding, with its current website providing group-riding etiquette, local riding information and organised training rides alongside the racing calendar. The club's wider aim is to build a strong cycling community throughout the Illawarra, welcoming everyone from social riders through to National and World Champions. Whether you're looking to introduce a junior to cycling, join a training ride, try your first criterium, learn to ride the velodrome, tackle closed-road racing at Mount Keira or progress towards State and National competition, Illawarra Cycle Club provides one of the strongest connections into organised cycling in the Wollongong region.
