About this club
Kangaroo Point Cycling Club (KPCC) is one of Brisbane’s longest-standing cycling communities and proudly holds the distinction of being Queensland’s oldest cycling club, established in 1905. The club caters for everyone from social and recreational riders through to developing racers and State and National-level competitors, with a strong focus on road and track cycling. The club’s history stretches back to a meeting at the Pineapple Hotel in Kangaroo Point, where it was established in July 1905. Historical records held by the State Library of Queensland indicate the organisation initially operated as the Red Bicycle Touring Club, adopting the Kangaroo Point Cycling Club name in the early twentieth century and continuing a remarkable Brisbane cycling tradition ever since. Despite that strong racing heritage, you don’t need to race to be part of KPCC. Social and recreational road riding forms a major part of the club, with organised rides catering for different levels of fitness and experience. Easier and medium-paced options provide an approachable entry into bunch riding, while faster training groups cater for cyclists wanting to improve their fitness or prepare for competition. The club also runs Challenge Rides, encouraging members to venture beyond their regular training routes and tackle longer, hillier or more adventurous rides around South East Queensland. It gives riders a pathway from regular local bunch riding into bigger days on the bike without necessarily needing to enter a race. For riders interested in competition, KPCC has a long association with road racing and criteriums, with accredited coaches helping members develop bike handling, bunch-riding skills, fitness, racing knowledge and tactics. Riders range from young juniors through to Masters, with the club welcoming people who are completely new to racing as well as experienced competitors. Track cycling is another important part of the club’s identity. KPCC describes itself as one of Queensland’s strongest track cycling clubs and provides coached track training at Brisbane’s Anna Meares Velodrome, part of the Sleeman Sports Complex at Chandler. Track bikes can also be borrowed through the club, helping make the discipline more accessible to riders wanting to give velodrome cycling a try. The club has a particularly strong commitment to women’s cycling. KPCC says it has the largest female membership of any cycling club in Queensland and offers dedicated women-only riding designed to help women develop confidence, group-riding skills and connections with other cyclists in a supportive environment. A dedicated Women’s Captain helps support this side of the club. Coaching and rider development are woven throughout the club rather than being limited to high-performance athletes. Accredited coaches assist newer riders with positioning, bike handling, training, bunch skills and racing knowledge, while experienced members and qualified ride leaders help riders become safer and more confident within a group. That combination of history, racing and accessible social riding is a big part of KPCC’s identity. The club has produced numerous State and National-level riders over its long history, while continuing to emphasise that cyclists of all abilities are welcome. Whether you’re looking to join a friendly Brisbane bunch, build your road-riding confidence, find a women’s riding community, try track cycling, improve your skills with a coach or progress into competitive road and track racing, Kangaroo Point Cycling Club provides a welcoming connection to one of Queensland’s most historic cycling communities.
