Mackay and District (M.A.D.) MTB Club

Mackay and District Mountain Bike Club (MAD MTBC) is a volunteer-run mountain bike club based in Mackay, Queensland. Formed in 2009 by a group of local riders with a passion for getting off-road, the club has grown into an active MTB community while keeping its original goal pretty simple — giving riders of all ages and abilities the opportunity to try mountain biking, develop their skills and enjoy riding with others. The club calls Rowallan Park, just north of Mackay, home. Through an agreement with the local Scouts group, MAD MTBC has developed and maintains around 15 kilometres of singletrack through the park's natural bushland. The network packs in plenty of variety, with climbs and descents, sweeping berms, switchbacks, rock gardens, jumps and technical features, along with A and B lines that allow riders to choose their level of challenge. Junior development is a big part of the MAD community. The club's Thursday Thunder program gives riders aged roughly 4–17 an opportunity to learn off-road skills, trail etiquette and safe riding before progressing into social riding or racing. The club also runs skills clinics, social rides, trail-building activities and women's sessions, providing plenty of ways to get involved without needing to be a serious racer. For those who do like a bit of competition, MAD MTBC has a strong racing culture, with events spanning cross-country, gravity enduro and endurance racing. Rowallan Park has hosted major events including the Queensland XCO State Championships, with the club hosting the championships there in 2016, 2017, 2023 and again in 2025. There's also plenty happening behind the scenes. Club volunteers put significant time into building, clearing and maintaining the Rowallan Park trails, while MAD MTBC continues to support the growth of mountain biking across the wider Mackay region. Start with the established, club-built singletrack at Rowallan Park, then make a bigger trip of it and head inland to explore the newer Finch Hatton MTB trails.
