About this club
Northcote Cycling Club is a historic cycling club based in Melbourne’s inner north, with a particularly strong heritage in track cycling. Based at the Darebin International Sports Centre (DISC) in Thornbury, the club has provided generations of riders with opportunities to discover velodrome cycling, develop their racing skills and compete as part of Melbourne’s long-established cycling community. The club’s history stretches back more than a century. The Northcote Amateur Cycling Club was established in the early 1920s, although organised cycling under the Northcote name existed in the area considerably earlier. That long history has made Northcote part of the fabric of cycling in Melbourne’s northern suburbs and given the club a significant place in Victorian cycling history. Track cycling is at the heart of Northcote Cycling Club. Over the years the club has delivered racing for riders ranging from beginners through to advanced competitors, juniors and Masters, with graded racing allowing cyclists of different abilities to participate and progress. Today, Northcote is associated with DISC, Melbourne’s indoor velodrome in Thornbury. The world-class indoor facility provides riders with a dedicated environment to develop speed, tactics, bike handling and race craft across the many different disciplines of track cycling. Before the development of DISC, the club was closely associated with the former Northcote Velodrome, which became one of Melbourne’s important track cycling venues. The velodrome hosted major racing, including the famous Austral Wheelrace, and developed a reputation for both high-level competition and a lively social atmosphere around the track. Northcote has been connected with some outstanding Australian cyclists throughout its history. Cadel Evans spent part of his early cycling development racing with Northcote, while renowned Australian track sprinter Gary Neiwand is also associated with the club. Generations of other road and track competitors have represented Northcote at club, State, National and international levels. Although its heritage is substantial, Northcote Cycling Club is not simply about elite competition. Its track programs have traditionally catered for riders across different ages and abilities, creating opportunities for cyclists to learn the skills of velodrome riding before progressing into faster and more competitive racing. The club remains part of a particularly rich cycling culture in Melbourne’s inner north, alongside neighbouring clubs and cycling facilities that have helped make the area one of Australia’s traditional heartlands of track and road cycling. Whether you're looking to discover track cycling, develop your velodrome skills, experience racing or connect with more than a century of Melbourne cycling history, Northcote Cycling Club provides a link to one of Victoria’s great track cycling traditions.
