About this club

Northern Hornets BMX Club (NBMX) is a thriving BMX racing club based at Sycamore Reserve in Mill Park, providing riders across Melbourne’s northern suburbs with a welcoming place to discover BMX, develop their skills and experience the excitement of racing. The club has deep roots in Victorian BMX history. The first Victorian BMX races were held in the area in 1979, before racing moved to Sycamore Reserve and the club evolved through several identities including Lalor BMX Club, Lalor Park BMX and Northern Park BMX. Northern BMX was re-established to bring grassroots BMX racing back to Melbourne’s north and continue that long local BMX tradition. BMX racing is at the heart of the club, with opportunities designed to cater for riders across different ages, abilities and ambitions. Beginners can learn the fundamentals of riding and racing in a supportive environment, while developing and experienced riders can progress through club and interclub competition towards State and National-level events. For younger riders, BMX provides a pathway beginning with balance bikes and progressing through junior racing categories, allowing children to build confidence and bike-handling skills as they grow. Adults are equally welcome, making BMX a sport that parents, children and riders from different generations can enjoy within the same club community. Coaching and rider development are particular strengths of Northern BMX. The club supports riders from beginner through to advanced levels, with experienced coaches helping members improve their bike handling, jumping, cornering, gate starts, race craft and confidence. Regular gate practice provides another opportunity for riders to work on their technique outside the racing environment. The club’s home at Sycamore Reserve BMX Track provides a dedicated BMX race facility featuring the jumps, berms, rhythm sections and starting gate needed for riders to develop the combination of speed, strength and technical skill that defines BMX racing. The facility has been redeveloped through collaboration between the club and the City of Whittlesea, continuing the site's long association with BMX in Melbourne’s north. Northern BMX places a strong emphasis on family, inclusion and community. Riders don't need to arrive as experienced racers to become part of the club; newcomers are encouraged to come and experience the sport, with trial opportunities and limited loan equipment helping make those first steps into BMX more accessible. The club is powered by its wider community of riders, families, coaches, officials and volunteers, who contribute to everything from racing and coaching to track maintenance and club activities. This volunteer involvement helps create a supportive environment where riders can progress at their own pace while becoming part of the wider BMX community. Whether you're looking to introduce a child to BMX, try racing for the first time, improve your skills and gate starts, progress towards higher-level competition or find an active family cycling community, Northern Hornets BMX Club provides a fantastic home for BMX racing in Melbourne’s north.
