Nowra Velo Club

Nowra Velo Club (NVC) is a welcoming road cycling club based in Nowra and the Shoalhaven region on the NSW South Coast, bringing together riders interested in road racing, training and recreational cycling. With a long history in the region, the club provides opportunities for developing riders through to experienced competitors while making the most of the varied riding terrain surrounding Nowra. Road racing is at the heart of Nowra Velo Club, with the club offering a variety of formats including graded scratch racing, handicaps, criteriums and individual time trials. Different formats and grades allow riders of varying strengths and experience levels to enjoy competitive cycling while developing their bunch skills, fitness, tactics and race craft. The club's racing makes use of locations around Nowra and the Shoalhaven, including dedicated circuit-style racing and longer road courses extending into the surrounding countryside. The region provides plenty of variety for road cyclists, from the flatter roads around the Shoalhaven River and coastal plain to rolling farmland and the challenging climbs towards Kangaroo Valley. Nowra Velo also maintains a strong tradition of club championship racing, with road, criterium, individual time trial and climbing competitions forming part of its history. Its mountain championship uses the climb at Woodhill, giving riders a very different challenge from the bunch racing found elsewhere in the club program. Beyond competition, the club supports regular training and recreational rides, providing opportunities for riders to build fitness, gain experience riding with others and connect with the local cycling community. Coaching is also available for riders wanting additional guidance with their skills, training or progression into racing. The surrounding Shoalhaven makes an excellent base for this style of riding. Club members have access to routes stretching from the coast and Jervis Bay through rural farmland to the hills and escarpment, creating plenty of options for everything from flatter endurance riding to demanding climbing. Nowra Velo has also maintained a connection with broader NSW cycling competition throughout its history. After its revival in the late 1960s, the club hosted significant open road races including the Shoalhaven Tour and Sutherland to Nowra, while today's members continue to represent the club beyond local competition. Like many regional cycling clubs, NVC is supported by a community of riders, officials and volunteers who help make its racing possible. Members contribute to course setup, marshalling and other race-day responsibilities, helping maintain a strong grassroots cycling community in the Shoalhaven.
