About this club
Southlake Illawarra BMX Club is a long-established, family-focused BMX racing club based at Croome Road Sporting Complex in Albion Park on the NSW South Coast. Founded in the early 1980s, the club has grown into one of NSW's larger BMX communities and is currently the only BMX racing club in the Illawarra, welcoming riders from two-year-old Mini Wheelers through to adults and high-level competitors. The club's dedicated BMX track has been its home since the 1980s, with racing beginning at the current facility in 1987 and the track going on to host the Australian BMX Titles in 1989. More recently, significant investment has gone into improving the facility, including track resurfacing, remodelling, a new start gate and sprint lane, creating a modern training and racing environment while retaining the club's long BMX history. There's plenty happening throughout the week, with structured coaching for different ability levels, regular gate practice and club racing. Racing changes with the seasons, generally running on Sunday mornings during winter and Friday nights through summer, giving riders plenty of opportunity to put their developing skills into practice. Southlake makes a particular effort to help newcomers discover the sport. The club has invested in loan BMX bikes, full-face helmets and gloves, allowing new riders to experience BMX without immediately needing to purchase all their own equipment. Combined with AusCycling's four-week trial membership, it's an accessible way for kids and adults to find out whether BMX is for them. For riders who want to take things further, Southlake provides a strong competitive pathway into NSW State, Australian National and international BMX racing. The club has helped develop some exceptional athletes over the years, most notably siblings Kai and Saya Sakakibara, who joined Southlake in 2007 and developed through the club before progressing onto the international stage. Saya went on to become Olympic Champion in BMX Racing at Paris 2024 and continues to represent Southlake Illawarra BMX Club at the highest level of the sport. Southlake riders continue to compete throughout the NSW and Australian BMX racing calendar, with club members representing the Illawarra across junior, Challenge, Cruiser, Masters and elite competition. Behind the racing is a strong community of families, coaches, officials and volunteers, all contributing to the training, race meetings and upkeep that keep the club running. Whether you're looking to get the kids started in BMX, jump behind the gate yourself, develop your racing skills or follow a pathway towards state, national or international competition, Southlake Illawarra BMX Club is a great place to become part of the Illawarra BMX community.
