About this club
The Cove BMX Club is a long-established, family-focused BMX racing club based in Adelaide's southern suburbs, providing opportunities for riders of all ages to discover BMX, develop their skills and progress from grassroots participation through to elite competition. Established in 1982, The Cove has been part of South Australia's BMX community for more than four decades. Known as “The Cove Cannons,” the club has built a strong reputation for combining a welcoming grassroots environment with a proven pathway for riders wanting to take their BMX racing further. BMX racing is at the heart of the club. Riders can begin from a very young age and progress through the different stages and categories of BMX as their skills and confidence develop. Mini Wheelers provide an introduction for the youngest riders, while Sprockets, age-group racing, Cruiser, Masters and higher-performance categories allow people to continue enjoying the sport throughout different ages and stages of life. The club places a strong emphasis on coaching and rider development. Structured sessions help riders develop fundamental bike handling before progressing into skills such as gate starts, jumping, cornering, race lines and BMX-specific fitness. Different coaching groups allow beginners and younger riders to learn at an appropriate pace while more experienced racers can continue refining their technique and performance. For people interested in trying BMX for the first time, The Cove provides an accessible pathway into the sport. Trial opportunities and access to loan bikes and protective equipment can help newcomers experience BMX before investing in their own race equipment. The Cove also has a strong competitive heritage. Club riders compete throughout South Australia and at National and international levels, with the club producing riders who have progressed to elite and World Championship competition. At the same time, grassroots participation remains an important part of the club's identity, allowing each rider to progress according to their own interests and ambitions. The club is one of the two resident BMX organisations behind the Sam Willoughby International BMX Facility (SWIBMX) at O'Halloran Hill, sharing the world-class venue with Happy Valley BMX Club. The facility provides access to high-quality BMX infrastructure capable of supporting developing riders through to major competition and elite training. The Cove's history is closely connected with Sam Willoughby, who developed through Adelaide's southern BMX community before becoming a multiple BMX World Champion and Olympic silver medallist. Today, the facility bearing his name provides the next generation of Cove riders with an exceptional environment in which to develop. Behind the racing is a strong community of riders, families, coaches, officials and volunteers. Their contribution to coaching, racing, track preparation and event delivery has been central to The Cove's success and longevity. Whether you're looking to introduce a young child to BMX, try racing for the first time, develop your gate starts and bike skills, race alongside the family or pursue State, National or international competition, The Cove BMX Club provides a welcoming pathway into BMX racing in Adelaide's south.
