Packer Park Velodrome
About this ride
Packer Park Velodrome is an outdoor cycling track in Carnegie in Melbourne’s south-east and one of only a handful of velodromes remaining in metropolitan Melbourne. The track measures 367 metres on the black measurement line and features a modern Plexipave surface, wide banked riding area and an inner flat track that provides space for riders to start, stop and build confidence before moving onto the banking. The velodrome has an impressive connection to Australian cycling history. It was used as a training venue during the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, with Australian athletes also training here in preparation for the 1960 and 1964 Olympic Games. Today it is home to the Carnegie Caulfield Cycling Club and continues to support training, racing and recreational cycling. Unlike many competition velodromes, Packer Park is also accessible for recreational riders. The track is open to the public during daylight hours, except during club training, race days and private bookings, making it a great option for riders wanting to experience velodrome riding or simply enjoy some traffic-free laps. RTS Tip: Packer Park is a particularly good velodrome for riders who are new to track-style riding, thanks to the inner flat track and wide transition onto the banking. Check the signs for scheduled club sessions or bookings before riding, and remember that helmets are compulsory.
