About this ride

Walcha MTB Trails are a compact, old-school cross-country network on the outskirts of Walcha in the New England region of NSW, offering around 10km of predominantly singletrack riding through a travelling stock reserve off Ohio North Road. The network contains around 12 mapped trails, with a mixture of green and blue-rated riding. Rather than heavily constructed bike-park trails, Walcha makes good use of the existing landscape and natural features, with flowing singletrack, tight corners, rocky sections, short climbs, berms and a handful of constructed features scattered throughout the network. One of the highlights is Speedy, a longer section where riders can open things up on flowing singletrack before encountering tighter turns, berms and natural rock gardens. Other mapped trails include Roo Ridge, Roo Racin’, Start Straight, Thunderbolt’s Run, Heading North and Home Climb, which can be linked together to explore most of the network. The riding is primarily cross-country, and with only modest elevation across the network it’s a good place to knock out a few laps rather than chase huge gravity descents. Walcha itself is also surrounded by quiet gravel roads and remote backcountry riding, making the MTB trails an easy addition to a bigger cycling weekend in the New England High Country. The trailhead is approximately 4km north of Walcha, off Ohio North Road. Parking is available near the picnic tables or farther along near the yellow gate, making the network easy to reach from town. For riders searching for Walcha mountain bike trails, New England MTB, mountain biking near Armidale or cross-country MTB in northern NSW, Walcha is a great little local network to add to the ride list. RTS Tip: This is a travelling stock reserve, so you may encounter cattle or sheep while riding. Leave gates exactly as you find them and give stock plenty of room. Trail marking is also limited, so having current mapping open is strongly recommended. Trailforks currently lists the network with a caution status, so check individual trail reports before heading out.
