Joe Ciavola Velodrome (Darebin International Sports Centre)

The Joe Ciavola Velodrome, commonly known as the DISC Velodrome, is Victoria’s premier indoor track cycling facility, located at the Darebin International Sports Centre in Thornbury, Melbourne. Opened in 2004 ahead of the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, the venue remains an important training and competition hub for Victorian and Australian track cycling. The velodrome features a 250m timber track with banking reaching around 42 degrees, delivering the fast, steep and highly specialised riding experience of an international-standard indoor track. Australian and world records have been broken on its boards, and the venue has hosted major events including the Melbourne Cup on Wheels, Austral and state and national-level racing. The track is named after Joe Ciavola, a prominent figure in Victorian cycling who raced successfully as an amateur before becoming instrumental in the development of the DISC velodrome. Today it continues to serve as the training venue for the Victorian Institute of Sport track team, while also hosting club racing, training and major cycling events. Unlike an outdoor community velodrome, this is a specialist indoor cycling facility, so access to the track is controlled. Casual use is available outside booked sessions, but riders need to check availability and appropriate track access requirements before visiting. RTS Tip: This is the real deal! With a 250m timber track and banking over 42 degrees, DISC is very different from rolling onto your local outdoor velodrome. Four laps equals 1km, but you'll need the appropriate track bike, skills and access arrangements before hitting the boards.
