About this ride

The Kilkivan to Kingaroy Rail Trail is an 88 km cycling and recreation trail through Queensland’s Gympie and South Burnett regions, following the former railway corridor between Kilkivan and Kingaroy. The route passes through Goomeri, Murgon, Wondai, Tingoora, Wooroolin, Memerambi and Crawford, taking riders through productive farmland, classic Queensland country towns and the distinctive red-soil landscapes of the South Burnett. With cafés, shops, toilets and other facilities available in many of the towns along the way, the trail can be tackled as a complete point-to-point adventure or broken into much shorter rides. The trail has two very different personalities. The approximately 45 km Kilkivan to Murgon section is unsealed and considerably more adventurous, with natural surfaces, gravel, original railway ballast, gates, rough gullies and waterway crossings. It is best suited to experienced riders on mountain bikes, particularly when conditions are wet. From Murgon to Kingaroy, the experience changes dramatically, with approximately 43–44 km of sealed rail trail providing an approachable ride through Wondai, Tingoora, Wooroolin, Memerambi and Crawford. This southern section, commonly known as the South Burnett Rail Trail, is suitable for a much wider range of cyclists and is a great option for recreational riders and families. The corridor follows part of the former Theebine to Nanango railway, which once carried passengers as well as agricultural and commercial freight, including produce associated with Kingaroy’s peanut industry. Today, riders can use the rail trail as the backbone for an even bigger cycling adventure, with signposted loop rides, the Moffatdale Winery Route and nearby mountain bike trails providing plenty of reasons to spend several days exploring the region. RTS Tip: Choose your section to match your bike and experience. Murgon to Kingaroy is the pick for an easier sealed rail-trail ride, while Kilkivan to Murgon should be treated as a proper adventure ride — bring a mountain bike, plenty of water, food, repair gear and offline navigation. There are numerous gates and low-level water crossings on the northern section, and parts can become difficult or impassable after heavy rain, so always check current trail conditions before setting out.
