Old Timberline Trail
About this ride
The Old Timberline Trail in Nannup, Western Australia, is a scenic 22 km one-way mountain bike, gravel and walking trail through the jarrah forests of the Southern Forests and Valleys region. Starting at Nannup Foreshore Park, the trail heads north towards Cambray Road near Cambray Siding, following much of the historic Kauri Timber Company tramway once used to haul timber from the forest and Barrabup Mill. Rated easy for mountain biking, it combines old railway formation, forest tracks and narrower sections of trail, with gentle gradients mixed with a few rockier and steeper stretches. Much of the ride follows beautiful St Johns Brook, passing through mature jarrah forest and some of Nannup’s best-known swimming spots. Riders pass Workmans Pool and Barrabup Pool, both excellent places to stop beside the water, before continuing towards Sleeper Hewers Hut. The trail also passes the remains of an old railway bridge and other reminders of the timber industry that once dominated this part of South West WA. The Old Timberline Trail is particularly good for riders wanting to try a beginner-friendly bikepacking adventure. Camping is available at Workmans Pool Campground, Barrabup Campground and Sleeper Hewers Campsite, with Sleeper Hewers featuring a basic hut with eight bunks, a toilet, picnic table and rainwater tank. Water availability isn't guaranteed and tank water must be treated, so riders should still carry an adequate supply. For a bigger ride, connect with the Sidings Rail Trail at Cambray Road to create the Timberline Loop, returning towards Nannup through more historic railway country. The Sidings Rail Trail also forms part of the long-distance Munda Biddi Trail, making Nannup an excellent base for riders wanting to explore a much larger network of off-road cycling routes. RTS Tip: For a brilliant Nannup adventure, ride the Old Timberline Trail out and return via the Sidings Rail Trail, or turn it into an overnight bikepacking trip with a stay at Sleeper Hewers. As of August 2026, part of the Sidings Rail Trail has a diversion because the St John Brook Bridge is closed, so check the latest trail map before attempting the full loop and follow the marked diversion. Mobile coverage is unreliable in the forest, so download your route, carry plenty of water and don't rely solely on your phone for emergencies.
