Prince of Wales Velodrome

Historic Prince of Wales Velodrome Site (not rideable)– Tamworth The Prince of Wales Velodrome was a historic outdoor cycling track on Peel Street in Tamworth, NSW, and for many years formed an important part of the city’s track cycling and sporting history. The velodrome featured a 250-metre concrete track, with lighting and an underpass providing access to the infield. It was one of regional NSW’s dedicated track cycling facilities and hosted generations of local riders, training and competition. However, this is an RTS card that needs a clear historical note: the Prince of Wales Velodrome no longer exists. Demolition of the velodrome began in 2024, with the site at 545 Peel Street cleared to make way for development of the University of New England’s new Tamworth campus. Planning documents confirm demolition and site-preparation works were underway by late 2024. The former site sits beside the Peel River shared pedestrian and cycling path, which continues through Bicentennial Park and connects into Tamworth’s wider active-transport network. While you can no longer ride the velodrome itself, the location remains connected to cycling through these surrounding paths.
