Stephen Hodge Criterium Circuit
About this ride
The Stephen Hodge Criterium Cycling Circuit is a purpose-built road cycling track at Stromlo Forest Park in Canberra, ACT. At 1.2 kilometres long and between 8 and 11 metres wide, it's one of only a handful of dedicated criterium circuits of its type in Australia, providing riders with a completely traffic-free environment for training, racing and developing road cycling skills. Don't let the relatively short distance fool you — the circuit has been specifically designed to make things interesting. The full loop combines fast flat sections, small inclines and technical corners, while a paved central area allows the track to be divided into two separate 650-metre loops. That flexibility means different layouts can be used for racing, training, skills sessions and events. The circuit is an important part of Canberra's road racing scene and regularly hosts club criteriums, junior racing, state-level competition and national events. It is used by clubs including Canberra Cycling Club and Vikings Cycling Club, whose SuperCrits series brings graded racing to Stromlo during the daylight-saving months. The venue was also used for the criterium stage of the 2026 Canberra Junior & Women's Tour. Best of all, you don't need to be racing to use it. The circuit is open to the public for cycling training free of charge when it hasn't been booked for an event or exclusive use. Riders must travel clockwise, and because it's primarily a performance training and racing facility, users should check the circuit rules and bookings before heading out. Being part of Stromlo Forest Park also means there's plenty more riding on the doorstep. Roadies can combine some circuit laps with a longer Canberra ride, while anyone bringing the MTB as well has Stromlo's extensive trail network right beside them. RTS TIP: Want to try criterium riding without mixing it with traffic? This is a brilliant place to practise cornering, bunch skills and putting down some fast laps. Check that the circuit isn't booked, then jump on for free — or time your visit with one of the local club races if you want to see just how quick 1.2 kilometres can feel!
