Tamworth Regional Cycling Centre

The Tamworth Regional Cycling Centre is a purpose-built cycling facility in Tamworth, NSW, combining a 333-metre asphalt velodrome with an 880-metre criterium circuit. Completed in 2019, the centre forms part of Tamworth’s wider sporting precinct and provides a dedicated, traffic-free environment for recreational riding, training and competitive cycling. The 333-metre outdoor velodrome gives riders a dedicated space for track-style training and racing, while the surrounding 880-metre, six-metre-wide criterium circuit offers a longer sealed loop. The criterium course isn't completely flat either, with a downhill section alongside the athletics track followed by a gentle climb near the Tamworth Sports Dome, adding a little variety to every lap. One of the best features of the centre is its accessibility. Both circuits are free for recreational riding and training when they haven't been exclusively booked for an event. The facility is generally accessible at all times, although Council recommends casual riders visit during daylight hours as track lighting is only available with bookings. The facility caters for more than serious racers, with recreational cyclists able to use both circuits alongside other permitted non-motorised users. Riders travel anti-clockwise, with slower riders keeping left and faster riders passing on the right. Helmets are compulsory and children need to be supervised. There are toilets, drinking water, parking, accessible facilities and play equipment on site, making it a handy option for families as well as riders wanting somewhere safe to put in some training laps. If you want to extend the ride, Tamworth also has more than 34 kilometres of shared pathways, including routes following the Peel River and through Bicentennial Park. Warm up with some laps of the criterium circuit, have a crack at the velodrome and then link into Tamworth's shared-path network if you're after some extra kilometres.
