About this club
Darwin Cycling Club (DCC) has been bringing cyclists together in Australia's Top End since 1955, providing opportunities for recreational riders, juniors and competitive cyclists across road, criterium, track, time trial and gravel riding. Affiliated with AusCycling, the club combines grassroots riding and training with an active racing calendar and some of the Northern Territory's largest cycling events. One of the club's standout venues is Hidden Valley Raceway, where cyclists get the unusual opportunity to ride and train on the smooth, closed motor-racing circuit. Regular criterium training uses the approximately 2.87km circuit, with riders divided into graded groups. Sessions can be fast and challenging, but riders are also able to participate at their own pace, making Hidden Valley a fantastic traffic-free environment for building bunch-riding skills, fitness and confidence. DCC also delivers a varied competitive calendar. Its 2026 program includes criteriums, team time trials, road racing and gravel, with events ranging from racing at Hidden Valley and the Territory Wildlife Park to rural road courses and the Marrakai Chase gravel event at Lake Bennett. This variety gives riders plenty of opportunities to try different styles of competitive cycling without being tied to a single venue or format. Track cycling has a long history in Darwin too. The city's current outdoor velodrome at Bagot Park dates back to before 1970, while Darwin's first amateur cycling track was established even earlier near what is now the Darwin Aviation Museum. Today the Darwin Velodrome at Bagot Park remains a community cycling facility used by cyclists and triathletes, and is also available to the general public outside scheduled club and organised sessions. Junior riders have long been part of the club community, with Darwin Cycling Club supporting young cyclists progressing into road and track competition. The club accepts the Northern Territory Government's Sports Voucher for eligible junior memberships, helping reduce the cost of getting children involved in organised cycling. Eligible newcomers can also access AusCycling's four-week free trial membership. For riders who aren't necessarily interested in racing, Darwin has an active bunch-riding community with rides catering for different speeds and experience levels. DCC's current riding information brings these opportunities together, ranging from faster training bunches to easier rides suitable for riders developing their group-riding confidence. The club clearly identifies which rides are independent community bunches rather than official DCC activities, making it easier for riders to understand what they're joining. The biggest event associated with the club is the Sunbuild Top End Gran Fondo, Darwin's premier mass-participation road cycling event. The 2026 edition offered fully closed-road riding from a 5km family ride through to a 135km Gran Fondo, starting from Darwin Waterfront and taking longer-distance riders through Palmerston, Charles Darwin National Park and Hidden Valley Raceway. The event combines serious cycling with accessible shorter distances, making it as much a celebration of the Top End cycling community as a challenge for experienced riders. More than 70 years after its formation, Darwin Cycling Club continues to provide a connection point for a remarkably diverse cycling community – from riders discovering bunch riding or entering their first criterium through to juniors, Masters and experienced racers representing the Northern Territory. Whether you're looking to find people to ride with, experience Hidden Valley Raceway on a bike, try track cycling, tackle a time trial or gravel event, get into racing or take on the Top End Gran Fondo, Darwin Cycling Club is a great connection to cycling in Australia's Top End.
