About this club
Gold Coast Cycling Club (GCCC) is one of South East Queensland's major cycling clubs, providing opportunities for riders across road, criterium, track and time trial cycling. Based primarily around Nerang and Runaway Bay, the club caters for juniors, recreational and social riders, developing racers, Elite athletes and Masters, with pathways ranging from learning fundamental riding skills through to State and National-level competition. The current club was established in 2017, when Gold Coast Goldstars Cycling Club and Gold Coast Cycling Club — formerly known as CATS — amalgamated. Both organisations already had long histories within Gold Coast cycling, so today's GCCC combines decades of local racing, training and rider development under a single club. A major hub for club activity is the Gold Coast Cycle Centre at Nerang, a council-run cycling facility incorporating an outdoor velodrome and dedicated traffic-free criterium circuit. The facility gives both adults and juniors a controlled environment for training, racing and skills development and hosts a significant portion of the club's current calendar. Criterium racing is a major part of GCCC. Its popular Wednesday Worlds series runs through the warmer months and caters for a broad range of abilities across five grades, from A through to E. Sunday criteriums are also held throughout the year, with racing taking place at different Gold Coast circuits including Nerang and the Luke Harrop Memorial Circuit at Runaway Bay. Road riders also have opportunities to step beyond the criterium circuit. The club's flagship road event is the Darren Smith Classic, with the 2026 edition combining circuit racing with a road race at Mt Alford. Time trialling is another established part of the program, including electronically timed sessions and handicap racing designed to encourage riders to chase their own personal best rather than simply the fastest rider on the day. Track cycling remains an active part of the club rather than simply a historical discipline. The current 2026 calendar includes regular track training and motor-paced sessions at Nerang, with the club's 2026–27 track squad covering individual timed events alongside bunch and team disciplines such as Scratch, Elimination, Points, Team Sprint and Team Pursuit. One of Gold Coast Cycling Club's standout strengths is its junior development program, which the club describes as one of the largest and most successful in Australia. Junior road training runs throughout the year for U9 through U17 riders, led by qualified coaches and covering everything from basic bike handling and general riding skills through to goal-specific training for developing racers. Importantly, children don't need to arrive as experienced racers or with an expensive road bike. New riders are welcome, and the club maintains a fleet of junior bikes that can be borrowed while children try the sport and develop their skills. This provides families with a much easier entry point before committing to purchasing dedicated cycling equipment. The club also hosts the Gold Coast Junior Tour, a major junior stage-racing event. The 2026 edition at Nerang featured five stages over two days for riders from U9 through U17, using different configurations and terrain within the Gold Coast Cycle Centre to test young riders across multiple styles of racing. GCCC isn't exclusively about competition. Its membership also caters for riders interested in training, social and recreational cycling, making the club accessible to people who want the community and development benefits of club cycling without necessarily pursuing racing. Whether you're looking to get a child into cycling, borrow a bike and learn the basics, try your first criterium, train on a velodrome, chase a time-trial PB, race road events or progress towards higher-level competition, Gold Coast Cycling Club provides one of the most comprehensive pathways into organised road and track cycling on the Gold Coast.
