About this club

Hobart Wheelers Dirt Devils (HWDD) is a large, volunteer-run cycling club based in Hobart, Tasmania, bringing road riders and mountain bikers together within one diverse cycling community. The club welcomes riders of all ages and abilities, whether they're interested in social riding, developing their skills, racing or progressing towards elite competition. Importantly, there's no requirement to race to be part of the club. Few Australian cycling clubs cover as much ground. HWDD's current disciplines include road racing, track, cyclocross, cross-country MTB, gravity enduro and downhill, while its results also include gravel. This makes it a useful home for riders who enjoy moving between bikes and disciplines rather than fitting neatly into a single cycling category. On the road, the club runs criterium and road racing around greater Hobart, with categories designed to let newer riders begin at an appropriate level and progress as their confidence and experience increase. Members also participate in the wider AusCycling Tasmania road calendar, while regular training rides and social activities provide opportunities for cyclists who aren't interested in competition. Track cycling is another established part of HWDD, based around the outdoor 440-metre New Town track. Club riders compete across sprint and endurance disciplines, with members also participating in Tasmania's famous Christmas Carnival Series as well as State and National Championships. The Dirt Devils side of the club brings a substantial mountain biking program, encompassing cross-country, downhill and gravity enduro. The club doesn't simply organise races either: it has a history of MTB trail advocacy, supporting improvements to riding opportunities around Hobart including initiatives involving the Meehan Range, Glenorchy MTB Park and the foothills of kunanyi/Mount Wellington. That advocacy remains relevant to the club's identity. In its submission to the Our Mountain's Future process, HWDD highlighted Hobart's unusual advantage of having high-quality mountain biking only kilometres from the city centre and advocated for improved rider experiences on kunanyi/Mount Wellington. The mountain is significant to both sides of the club, with HWDD also running the kunanyi Challenge, a road time trial to the Pinnacle whose past winners include Cadel Evans and Richie Porte. Junior development is particularly broad because young riders aren't restricted to one discipline. HWDD provides opportunities for juniors to develop bike handling, confidence and race skills and participate across road, track, cyclocross and mountain biking. Junior skills sessions have used the traffic-free Tolosa Criterium Circuit, while the club has also offered track opportunities at New Town. The pathway is clearly active rather than historical. In May 2026, AusCycling profiled 12-year-old HWDD rider Ivy Natera, who had already completed an extraordinary 140 club events after first discovering the sport through a HWDD junior skills session in 2021. Her racing spans multiple disciplines, including track, road and cyclocross. HWDD has also produced riders who have reached the highest levels of the sport. AusCycling identifies MTB Olympians Sid Taberlay and Scott Bowden among the riders to have come through the club, while current members include riders competing professionally internationally. The club's current structure reflects just how broad its activities are, with dedicated volunteer roles covering Mountain Biking, Road & Track, Cross-Country, Downhill, Track, Road Racing, Cyclocross, Gravity Enduro, Junior Development, Women's Development and Trail Advocacy. It's a genuinely integrated cycling organisation rather than separate discipline groups simply sharing a name. Whether you're looking to join a social road ride, introduce a child to cycling, race criteriums, try the velodrome, tackle XC, race downhill or enduro, get muddy at cyclocross or become involved in improving Hobart's trails, Hobart Wheelers Dirt Devils provides one of Tasmania's broadest connections into the cycling community.
