Pedal Power ACT

Pedal Power ACT is Canberra’s community cycling organisation, bringing together thousands of riders and working to make cycling safer, easier and more accessible across the ACT. Founded in 1975, Pedal Power welcomes people across different ages, abilities, riding styles and types of bike — from everyday commuters and recreational riders through to road cyclists, mountain bikers, gravel riders, families and people simply looking for a friendly group to ride with. At the heart of Pedal Power is a belief that more people should be able to enjoy riding a bike, more often. Rather than focusing primarily on racing, the organisation combines social riding, skills development, education, community programs and cycling advocacy to help people build confidence and make cycling part of everyday life. Social riding is a major part of the Pedal Power community, with a broad range of group rides catering for different distances, speeds, terrain and experience levels. Riders can choose from relaxed recreational outings through to longer and more challenging rides, with options incorporating Canberra’s extensive shared-path network, roads, gravel and off-road riding. For those who want to explore further afield, Pedal Power also supports day rides and multi-day cycling tours, giving members opportunities to discover destinations beyond their usual local routes while riding as part of an organised group. Pedal Power has a particularly strong focus on making cycling approachable for beginners and people returning to riding. Skills programs help adults learn to ride or rebuild their confidence, while dedicated children's programs introduce younger riders to fundamental bike skills in a supportive environment. Practical bike-maintenance workshops provide another way for riders to become more confident and self-sufficient. The organisation is also one of Canberra's most prominent voices for cycling advocacy. Pedal Power works with government, planners, community organisations and decision-makers to push for safer streets, better-connected bike paths, improved intersections, secure bike parking and infrastructure that makes riding a practical option for transport as well as recreation. That advocacy has been part of Pedal Power from the beginning. Its story grew from a community protest ride calling for safer cycling connections before the organisation formally came together in 1975. Today it continues to represent both people who already ride and those who would like to ride but may not yet feel that Canberra's roads and infrastructure make cycling accessible to them. Inclusion is central to the organisation's philosophy. Pedal Power works to reduce the social, financial and practical barriers that can prevent people from cycling and encourages participation regardless of age, background, ability or preferred style of riding. A large volunteer community supports social rides, advocacy, training, events and other programs, giving members opportunities not only to ride but to contribute to Canberra's wider cycling community. Whether you're looking to find people to ride with, explore Canberra by bike, try gravel or off-road riding, learn to ride, build your confidence, improve your bike skills or help make Canberra a better place to cycle, Pedal Power ACT provides a welcoming connection to the wider cycling community of the ACT.
