Sydney Cycling Club

Sydney Cycling Club (SCC) is one of Sydney's largest and most established cycling communities, bringing together riders through road cycling, social and training rides, racing, touring and off-road adventures. Founded in 1978, the club was created with a deliberately different philosophy for its time. Founder Don Beavis wanted a cycling club that was about more than racing, combining competitive cycling with recreational riding, touring, friendship and the simple enjoyment of being on a bike. That philosophy continues to shape Sydney Cycling Club today. Road cycling is at the heart of the club, with a substantial program of group rides catering for different levels of fitness and experience. Riders can progress from introductory bunch riding through increasingly challenging groups, building confidence, fitness, road awareness and group-riding skills along the way. Safety and rider development are particularly important to SCC. New road members complete an Intro to Bunch Riding session, helping riders understand the club's calls, rotations, etiquette and expectations before joining its regular groups. This creates a structured pathway for cyclists who may be comfortable riding alone but are new to organised bunch riding. For riders interested in competition, the club has a long history of road racing, criteriums and time trials, with members competing from grassroots club events through to State, National and international levels. Racing is an important part of SCC's heritage, but riders don't need to race to be an active part of the club. Women's cycling is another important part of the SCC community. Dedicated women's development activities and women-only rides provide opportunities to build skills and confidence while connecting with other female cyclists. The club also embraces riding beyond Sydney's regular road loops. Touring and cycling trips have been part of SCC since its earliest years, taking members to riding destinations around Australia and overseas. Longer adventures provide opportunities to combine cycling with travel, exploration and the social side of club life. SCC's riding interests also extend off-road, reflecting a membership that isn't necessarily interested in sticking exclusively to the bitumen. This gives members opportunities to mix traditional road cycling with different surfaces and cycling adventures while remaining connected to the wider club community. Sydney Cycling Club has developed a substantial history over more than four decades, with members representing the club at high levels of competition while thousands of everyday riders have simply found new people to ride with, new places to explore and new goals to chase.
