About this club
Western Sydney Mountain Bike Club (WSMTB) is one of New South Wales' most active and diverse mountain bike clubs, bringing riders together across cross-country, gravity, cyclocross and gravel-style racing, alongside junior development, women's riding, social activities and trail advocacy. Based primarily at Yellomundee Regional Park near Penrith and the Blue Mountains, the club has been part of the Western Sydney riding community for more than 30 years. At the centre of WSMTB is Yellomundee Regional Park, located around eight kilometres north-west of Penrith on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Mountains. The park sits within the traditional Country of the Boorooberongal clan of the Darug people, and its network of purpose-built MTB trails provides the club with a home for racing, skills development, social riding and community activities. Cross-country racing has long been a cornerstone of the club. WSMTB runs an XCO-style series using approximately 4–6km laps at Yellomundee, with graded racing from A through D Grade, separate women's grades, junior categories, E-Bike and a non-competitive Participation category designed as an introduction to racing. Under-10 racing is free, giving younger riders an accessible first experience of MTB competition. The club also provides a pathway beyond local competition. In July 2026, WSMTB hosted Round 3 of the AusCycling NSW/ACT XCO State Series at Yellomundee, with racing from J13 through to Elite and Masters, as well as E-Bike and Adaptive categories. The club also participates in the Central West XC Mountain Bike Interclub Series, connecting Western Sydney riders with events at Mudgee, Orange, Rydal, Dubbo and Bathurst. WSMTB's gravity program has expanded significantly, with a multi-round 2026 series using Yellomundee's more technical descending trails. The format is designed to be approachable on a normal mountain bike, while still providing plenty of challenge for experienced gravity and enduro riders. The club isn't confined to mountain bikes either. Cyclocross and mixed-surface racing form part of the calendar, with WSMTB hosting a round of the NSW/ACT Cyclocross Series at Sun Valley Reserve. Its CritCross series at Penrith Paceway and Showground mixes gravel, grass and asphalt, creating fast, accessible racing particularly suited to gravel and CX bikes. Junior development is an important part of the club. WSMTB caters from U10 through to U17 and runs junior coaching and skills sessions alongside its broader Club Days. Current sessions are led by AusCycling-accredited coaches and welcome less-experienced riders, with children able to participate on the bike they already own rather than needing specialist race equipment. Importantly, WSMTB isn't just about race day. Its regular Club Days bring several sides of the community together at once, incorporating junior training, women's coaching, social rides, trail work, a BBQ and community activities. This provides an easy entry point for riders who want to meet the club without immediately signing up for a race. The annual calendar includes ten Club Days spread throughout the year. One of the club's most significant roles is its stewardship of Yellomundee's MTB trail network. Working in partnership with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, WSMTB maintains the trails through regular volunteer maintenance days. This work includes erosion mitigation and weed management as well as discouraging unauthorised trail building, vandalism and illegal dumping. That relationship has developed over decades of consultation between riders, volunteers and land managers, allowing mountain biking to coexist with the environmental and cultural significance of Yellomundee Regional Park. Club volunteers aren't simply maintaining trails for WSMTB events—the work helps protect and sustain a network enjoyed by the wider riding community. Whether you're looking to get a child onto the trails, learn MTB skills, meet other riders, try your first XC race, race gravity, tackle cyclocross, volunteer on the trails or progress into State-level competition, Western Sydney Mountain Bike Club provides one of the most complete connections into mountain biking in Western Sydney and the lower Blue Mountains.
