Bass Coast Rail Trail
About this ride
The Bass Coast Rail Trail is a spectacular 23km coastal rail trail between Woolamai and Wonthaggi in Victoria’s Gippsland region. Following the route of the former Wonthaggi railway, the trail combines rolling farmland, coastal heath and impressive views across Bass Strait and towards Phillip Island. The surface is a mix of compacted granitic sand, gravel and boardwalk, with mostly gentle gradients and just a couple of moderate climbs. A standout feature is the historic Kilcunda Trestle Bridge, where the old railway crosses above Bourne Creek with the ocean as a backdrop. The trail also passes through or near Anderson, Kilcunda and Dalyston before reaching Wonthaggi, with cafés, picnic areas and facilities available along the way. RTS Tip: If you’re looking for the most scenic section, Anderson to Kilcunda is a great shorter option, with coastal views and the Kilcunda Trestle Bridge along the way. For the full experience, ride the 23km one way between Woolamai and Wonthaggi or make it a 46km return ride. Take care at Bass Highway crossings and check current trail conditions before heading out, particularly around the coastal sections near Kilcunda.
