About this ride

Rising dramatically above Victoria's High Country, Mount Buffalo National Park is an incredible cycling destination, offering one of Australia's most recognised road climbs alongside a network of gravel roads and tracks across the spectacular alpine plateau. The classic Mount Buffalo road climb begins at Eurobin Creek Picnic Area and climbs for just under 21km, gaining approximately 1,013m of elevation at a remarkably consistent 4–5% gradient. Riders can settle into the climb and steadily work their way towards The Gap and Mount Buffalo Chalet, surrounded by granite cliffs, forests and increasingly impressive views across the High Country. For those wanting to keep going, the adventure can continue beyond the traditional finish towards The Horn, Mount Buffalo's highest point at 1,723m. The final section beyond Cresta Valley changes to gravel, adding another dimension to an already memorable mountain ride. Gravel riders can also explore a number of the park's management and service roads, including Reservoir Road, Mount McLeod Track, the Gorge Precinct, Lake Catani Track, 9 Mile Creek Track and The Horn Road. Terrain varies considerably, with everything from relatively gentle gravel through to steep and more remote sections. The Gorge–Lake Catani Track is another great option, providing a wide, gently graded gravel connection between the historic Mount Buffalo Chalet and Gorge precinct and beautiful Lake Catani. There is no singletrack mountain biking within Mount Buffalo National Park, and bikes aren't permitted on walking-only tracks, so riders need to stick to roads and designated shared cycling routes. Whether you're chasing the iconic road climb, adding some gravel to the adventure or spending a day exploring the plateau by bike, Mount Buffalo delivers a pretty spectacular backdrop for a ride. RTS Tip: Ride The State will work on adding the individual Mount Buffalo cycling and gravel routes as separate Ride Cards over time. Until then, use the More links to explore the cycling options and plan your ride. Conditions on the mountain can change quickly, so check current park and road conditions before heading out and remember that the main Mount Buffalo Road is narrow and shared with vehicles.
