About this ride

Butterfly MTB Trails – Nowra Just south of Nowra on the NSW South Coast, Butterfly MTB Trail is one of the mountain bike networks in Currambene State Forest, developed and maintained by the volunteer-run South Coast United Mountain Bikers (SCUM). Along with nearby Superbowl and Coondoo, it forms part of one of the Shoalhaven’s key mountain biking destinations. Butterfly delivers a very different riding experience to the more flow-focused Superbowl. The approximately 5.5km intermediate XC network is deliberately a little “rough and ready”, with mostly hand-built, old-school singletrack that follows the natural character of the forest. Expect rocky technical sections, short punchy climbs, tight natural trail and technical descents, with plenty of twists, turns and changing terrain to keep you engaged. This isn't manicured machine-built flow — Butterfly is all about natural trail, bike handling and finding your line through the terrain. The network is compact enough to explore in a shorter session, but its technical nature means you can easily spend time riding sections again and working on different lines. For riders who enjoy old-school XC and natural singletrack, Butterfly has plenty of character packed into a relatively small network. Butterfly is also only around five minutes from Superbowl along Butterfly Road, making it easy to combine the two on the same riding trip. Superbowl offers a more varied mix of XC, flow, jumps and gravity-style features, while Butterfly provides a distinctly more raw and technical experience. Riders looking for an even bigger day can also add nearby Coondoo MTB Park. Together, Butterfly, Superbowl and Coondoo provide a great base for exploring Nowra mountain bike trails, Shoalhaven mountain biking and MTB trails on the NSW South Coast. RTS Tip: Come to Butterfly for the character! If you're into natural, hand-built XC rather than polished flow trails, this is one to add to the list. Combine it with Superbowl for two very different riding experiences in the same trip, or add Coondoo and make a full day of exploring the SCUM trail networks. Check SCUM’s current trail status before heading out, as conditions and forestry activity can affect access.
