Coningham Nature Recreation Area
About this ride
Coningham Nature Recreation Area, around 25km south of Hobart, offers a quieter, more natural style of mountain biking through almost 500 hectares of coastal bushland overlooking the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. Rather than a purpose-built MTB park, riding here follows a network of 4WD tracks, fire trails and firebreaks, making it a good option for shorter exploratory rides close to the city. Expect rolling forest terrain, some punchy climbs and descents, native bushland and glimpses towards the surrounding bays and coastline. The reserve is multi-use and is also popular with walkers, horse riders and nature lovers, so Coningham is best approached as a scenic bush ride rather than a dedicated trail-centre experience. RTS Tip: Stick to the formed trails and firebreaks where cycling is permitted and keep an eye out for walkers, horses and other reserve users. There are relatively few formalised tracks and signage can be limited, so download the reserve map before you ride. Also clean your bike before and after visiting to help prevent the spread of phytophthora and protect the reserve’s significant native vegetation.
