D’Aguilar Side Country / Whoa Boy

D'Aguilar Side Country – Whoa Boy! is one of South East Queensland's classic backcountry adventures, combining big climbs, rugged forest roads and thrilling descents through the stunning D'Aguilar National Park. Covering around 40.5km with approximately 1,500m of climbing, this is a ride best suited to experienced riders looking for a challenging day in the saddle. Starting from Highvale (or alternatively Mt Nebo or Dundas Road), the route climbs the iconic Goat Track before traversing the ridgelines of the D'Aguilar Range. From there, riders tackle the famous Whoa Boy descent—a steep, loose and technical trail featuring water bars, rocky sections and fast corners that demand confidence and control. Conditions can change significantly after rain, so ride within your limits and don't hesitate to walk the trickier sections if needed. The adventure continues through remote forest roads, creek crossings and lush rainforest gullies, including the equally enjoyable Burnt Yard Break descent. Wildlife is abundant throughout the ride, with wallabies, native birdlife and even the occasional deer or wild pig spotted in the quieter sections of the park. Mobile reception is limited, making it a ride that's best tackled with a riding buddy and the appropriate safety gear. While the route is often ridden on a gravel bike, the steep gradients, loose surfaces and technical descents mean a cross-country mountain bike is the preferred choice for most riders.
