Dunc Gray Velodrome

Dunc Gray Velodrome – Bass Hill, Sydney Dunc Gray Velodrome is one of Australia’s most significant track cycling venues and the only indoor velodrome in NSW. Located at Bass Hill in Western Sydney, it was purpose-built for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and remains an active venue for track racing, training and rider development. The centrepiece is its 250m international-standard Baltic pine track, designed by renowned Australian velodrome designer Ron Webb. The bends reach an impressive 42 degrees of banking, with the straights banked at 12.5 degrees, creating the fast and distinctive riding experience of an Olympic-standard indoor track. Dunc Gray hosted six days of track cycling during the Sydney Olympics, as well as Paralympic competition. It was here that Australians Brett Aitken and Scott McGrory won Olympic gold in the Madison, adding another chapter to the venue’s place in Australian cycling history. Today the track continues to host club racing, training, junior development and major competitions. Bankstown Sports Cycling Club regularly uses the venue, while other NSW clubs and riders travel to Bass Hill to access the state’s only indoor track. The velodrome is named after Australian cycling legend Edgar “Dunc” Gray, who won Australia’s first Olympic cycling gold medal at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The building itself is another reminder of Sydney 2000, with its distinctive roof designed to resemble a giant cycling helmet when viewed from above. Importantly, despite uncertainty surrounding the venue’s future in recent years, Dunc Gray remains operational for track cycling in 2026. AusCycling currently manages cycling access and lists track bookings at the venue, and racing and training have continued through 2026. Riders must hold a valid AusCycling Race or Lifestyle membership to participate.
