Federation Trail
About this ride
Federation Trail is the named shared bicycle and pedestrian path along the historic Main Outfall Sewer reserve in Melbourne's west, from Spotswood toward Werribee. Melbourne Water's Greening the Pipeline page records that VicRoads built the Federation Trail in 2005 along the sewer reserve, that the reserve is 40 m wide and 27 km long from the old Spotswood pumping station (Scienceworks) to the Western Treatment Plant at Werribee, and that the land was declared a road named Federation Trail under the Road Management Act. Hobsons Bay City Council's Federation Trail page describes the bicycle path starting in Yarraville and passing through Hobsons Bay to Werribee, with access to the Hobsons Bay conservation area from the Primula Avenue carpark at D.N. Duane Reserve, Brooklyn. Bicycle Network reported (December 2025) that new ramps and bridges now connect the trail through to the Yarra River / Bay Trail West at Hyde Street.
