About this ride
Geilston Bay MTB Trails, on Hobart’s eastern shore, offer a surprisingly extensive network of natural singletrack and forest trails around Pilchers Hill and Rocky Tom. The area has around 14km of riding, with green, blue and black-rated options ranging from easier trails such as Geilston Gully Circuit and G-String Climb through to flowing intermediate descents and more technical black lines. Expect classic local-style riding with rocky sections, roots, jumps, drops and plenty of short climbs and descents through dry woodland. Better still, Geilston Bay connects into Shag Bay and the wider Meehan Range, opening up the possibility of some seriously big rides across Hobart’s eastern shore. RTS Tip: If you want to make a bigger adventure of it, use Geilston Bay as your gateway into the Meehan Range — the interconnected trails allow you to link several riding areas without getting back in the car. Pilchers Hill Reserve is a good starting point for easier-to-intermediate riding, but remember some tracks are shared with walkers and the Pilchers Hill climbing track is one-way for mountain bikes, with a separate MTB descent back down.
