Grampians Rail Trail
About this ride
The Grampians Rail Trail is a scenic 10km shared trail from Stawell West to Mount Dryden Road, giving riders an easy-going taste of Victoria’s spectacular Grampians region. The relatively flat, fine-gravel route follows part of the historic narrow-gauge tramway once used to haul sandstone from Heatherlie Quarry to Stawell, with around 8km running directly along the old railway alignment. Expect open farmland, bushland, wildflowers, creek crossings, bridges and boardwalks, with the dramatic Gariwerd / Grampians ranges providing the backdrop. It’s an approachable ride for mountain bikes, gravel bikes and hybrids, and works particularly well for families or riders looking for something more relaxed than the region’s mountain bike trails. RTS Tip: The official rail trail currently finishes at Mount Dryden Road, but adventurous riders can continue another 15km to Halls Gap using a combination of quiet country roads and dirt tracks. That connection isn’t an official signed rail trail and includes a bush-track section that can become unsuitable after heavy rain, so download the route before setting off. For an easier outing, simply ride the rail trail out and back for around 20km.
