About this ride

The Grand Ridge Rail Trail winds for 13km between Mirboo North and Boolarra through the beautiful Strzelecki Ranges in Gippsland. Following the former Morwell to Mirboo North railway line, the trail rolls through lush eucalypt forest, farmland, deep cuttings and towering embankments, with historic brick culverts and two impressive steel arch bridges adding plenty of railway character along the way. The compacted earth and crushed-granite surface is suitable for mountain bikes, gravel bikes and hybrids, while the gentle railway gradient makes it an approachable ride for families and recreational cyclists. Darlimurla, roughly halfway along the trail, provides a handy rest point with a shelter, interpretive information and access to the historic Big Tree. RTS Tip: For the easier option, start at Mirboo North and ride towards Boolarra — you’ll enjoy a predominantly gentle descent through the forest. Ride it both ways for a 26km return trip, or organise a car shuffle between the two towns. There are toilets, parking and picnic facilities at both ends, plus cafés and shops in Mirboo North and supplies in Boolarra, making it an easy trail to turn into a relaxed half-day adventure.
