About this ride

Harrigans Lane is an epic 120km gravel cycling adventure from Tenterfield, taking riders deep into the rugged landscapes and quiet backroads of the New England High Country. This is a proper full-day ride. The route combines smooth country roads, gravel, farm roads and rougher sections, with the distance and climbing making it a challenging adventure even for experienced riders. Around 52% of the route is unpaved, with changing surfaces and some steep gradients adding to the challenge. One of the defining features of the ride is the Harrigans Lane climb, but the route delivers plenty more along the way as it travels through remote high-country landscapes towards Timbarra National Park. Expect long stretches away from towns, very little traffic in places and the kind of scenery that has helped make Tenterfield one of northern NSW's emerging gravel riding destinations. There's a pretty good reward waiting later in the ride too — a spectacular swimming spot on the Boonoo Boonoo River at around the 71km mark, perfect for cooling off before tackling the remainder of the journey. While many of the roads are wide and relatively smooth, don't underestimate this one. The combination of 120km distance, climbing, steep descents and potentially rutted gravel roads means riders should have good fitness and be confident handling changing surfaces. For anyone planning a gravel cycling trip to Tenterfield, Harrigans Lane is one of the region's signature big-day adventures and a great excuse to spend a few days exploring the many other gravel routes throughout the New England High Country. RTS Tip: This ride travels through remote country, so come prepared with plenty of food and water, repair equipment and offline navigation. Mobile reception can be limited and road conditions can change after wet weather. Check current conditions before setting out and follow the mapping link for the detailed Harrigans Lane route and navigation.
