About this ride

Hassans Walls Reserve rises above Lithgow on the western edge of the Blue Mountains, offering mountain bikers a mix of natural trails, fire roads and technical riding surrounded by spectacular sandstone country. The reserve covers more than 780 hectares and climbs to over 1,100 metres elevation, with huge views across the Hartley Valley and surrounding ranges. The riding around Hassans Walls has a distinctly raw and natural feel. Expect rocky terrain, steep climbs and descents, loose surfaces and sections of technical singletrack rather than the manicured experience of a modern bike park. Hassans Walls Road itself also makes a good mountain bike or gravel ride up towards the lookout. Local MTB mapping shows trails including Channel 6, Ewok Forest, Gun Club DH, Pony Xpress, Pottery Left and Hassans Fire Trail, giving riders opportunities to link different trails and forest roads into a bigger session. Some of these descend steeply from the escarpment, so there’s riding here that will appeal to confident and experienced mountain bikers. The landscape is a big part of the experience. Hassans Walls is known for its sandstone cliffs, pagoda rock formations, fern-filled gullies and native bushland, with several lookouts providing incredible views across the Lithgow and Blue Mountains region. There is also a long history of MTB development at Hassans Walls. Lithgow City Council approved construction of a mountain bike/walking trail in the reserve in 2009, and later developed a broader strategy looking at purpose-built MTB opportunities for the area. For riders searching for Hassans Walls mountain bike trails, mountain biking in Lithgow, Lithgow MTB trails or mountain biking near the Blue Mountains, this is a riding area well worth exploring. RTS Tip: Hassans Walls is best approached as a natural MTB riding area rather than a fully developed bike park. Trail conditions, access and individual lines can change, so check current mapping before heading out and don't rely on old trail information. Some trails are steep and technical, so choose lines that suit your ability and take the opportunity to stop at the lookouts while you're up there.
