About this ride

The Jim Soorley Bikeway is a wide, mostly separated cycling route on Brisbane’s northside, providing an important link between the Kedron Brook Bikeway and Moreton Bay Cycleway. Running through the wetlands between the Gateway Motorway and Brisbane Airport, it combines a surprisingly green and open ride with one of the city's most useful cycling connections. The route runs east from the Nundah/Toombul area towards Nudgee Road, with riders largely separated from motor traffic. The relatively straight, wide pathway and flat terrain make it popular with commuters, but it works equally well for recreational riders wanting an easy cruise, families building up to longer distances or road and fitness riders looking for uninterrupted kilometres. Where the Jim Soorley Bikeway really comes into its own is through its connections. At Nundah it links directly with the Kedron Brook Bikeway, which runs almost 20 kilometres west towards Mitchelton. Head in the other direction and you can connect with the Moreton Bay Cycleway, continue towards Nudgee Beach and Boondall Wetlands, or build the route into a considerably longer north Brisbane adventure. The wider network has become even more useful following the completion of a new Moreton Bay Cycleway connection between Eagle Farm and Brisbane Airport. Riders can now use the northern bikeway network to create longer journeys towards the airport, Gateway Bridge and Brisbane's eastern suburbs, with Brisbane City Council specifically highlighting the Jim Soorley Bikeway as part of these extended routes. There's not a huge amount of climbing or technical riding here — the appeal is being able to settle into a rhythm and simply roll. The open wetlands and proximity to the coast do mean wind can make a noticeable difference, and the path can become busy with cyclists, runners and other users around peak periods. RTS TIP: Don't necessarily ride Jim Soorley as a standalone out-and-back — use it as the connector it was made to be! Link it with Kedron Brook, continue towards Nudgee Beach and Boondall Wetlands or build it into a much bigger Brisbane northside loop. Just check the wind before you set off; that lovely easy tailwind on the way out can become a very different ride home
