About this ride

Just east of Perth, Kalamunda and the Perth Hills offer a huge playground for gravel riding, with quiet backroads, forest tracks, fire trails and old railway corridors providing plenty of options for riders looking to escape the city. Starting around Kalamunda, riders can quickly leave the suburbs behind and head into the forests and rolling terrain of the Darling Scarp. The surrounding network combines gravel roads and unsealed tracks with plenty of climbing, making it possible to create everything from a shorter gravel spin through to a challenging full-day adventure. The landscape is classic Perth Hills — jarrah and marri forest, granite outcrops, valleys and elevated sections with views back towards the coastal plain. Head further into the hills and the riding opens up towards Mundaring and an even larger network of cycling routes and backcountry tracks. There are also some well-known cycling trails to discover throughout the region. The Kalamunda Railway Heritage Trail provides a more accessible introduction to riding in the hills, while longer adventures can connect with routes including the Munda Biddi Trail and Kep Track around Mundaring. With Perth sitting within easy reach, Kalamunda makes a brilliant base for riders wanting to explore gravel cycling in Western Australia without having to travel far from the city. RTS Tip: There isn't just one Kalamunda gravel ride — the Perth Hills are packed with backroads, forest tracks and cycling routes waiting to be explored. Ride The State will continue working on adding individual routes as separate Ride Cards over time. Until then, use the mapping link to explore route options and always check current access, fire, weather and trail conditions before heading out.
