About this ride

The Kalateenee MTB Trails are a fantastic mountain bike network in Kalateenee State Forest near Kempsey on the NSW Mid North Coast, with around 25–30km of cross-country and gravity trails winding through beautiful eucalypt, ironbark and brushbox forest. Managed and maintained by Macleay Valley Mountain Bikers, the network caters for a broad range of abilities, from beginners finding their feet on easier trails through to experienced riders looking for faster, more technical terrain. Most trails are also suitable for adaptive mountain bikes. There’s a good mix of XC and gravity riding, with the gravity side of the network receiving a significant upgrade in recent years. Five enduro trails were professionally rebuilt with improved features, jumps and more weather-resilient construction, adding another dimension to what was already a well-established local trail network. Navigation is well catered for, with trail signs throughout the park showing distances and difficulty ratings, making it relatively easy to link together trails for anything from a short session to a bigger day exploring the forest. Access is straightforward too. The original trailhead is behind Kempsey Golf Club off Macleay Valley Way, while a newer dedicated MTB car park on Grass Tree Road provides another entry point and includes accessible toilets. For riders searching for Kempsey mountain bike trails, Kalateenee MTB Park, mountain biking on the NSW Mid North Coast or MTB trails near Port Macquarie, Kalateenee is definitely one to add to the ride list. RTS Tip: With 25–30km of trails and a mixture of XC and gravity riding, it’s worth allowing a few hours rather than treating Kalateenee as a quick stop. Check the current trail status before travelling, particularly after wet weather, and use the trail signage and current mapping to choose trails that match your ability.
